Mother

Mother and child were buried today

in the same casket

the beautiful child wore a white-headband

and lay in her mother’s arms

Mother’s second child…

Mother’s first child will ask

tomorrow, and the next day

and the next day

“When is mother coming back?”

until she understands

her mother and the baby are

not coming home

from the hospital

Lord, I pray you watch

over her first child

for she’ll need you now

more than ever

at three years eight months

her mother was her only world

Let her grow to become the

woman you want her to be

kiss her softly each night

as she rests; remind her constantly

of your love

Use her grandmother and great-grandmother

to teach her

for as long as they can be here

(twenty-three year old mother and stillborn child buried together today)
